Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer

The Works are recruiting for a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer for our client in Romsey.


This position requires a multi skilled Maintenance Engineer / Fitter with excellent mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic knowledge and a good understanding of electrical applications and installations.

The ideal candidate will be a good “all rounder” and be able to investigate, diagnose and repair faults on the production equipment and tooling.

The candidate must demonstrate a minimum of 5 years previous experience of working in a similar role and have a methodical and practical approach to work.


As Maintenance Engineer you will be working alongside experienced production engineers and operatives to maintain the continuous running of a variety of plastic processing machinery and other production equipment including pipe and profile extruders, injection moulding machines, water chillers, air and nitrogen compressors, pipe bending machines, manual and CNC lathes and various plastic welding and metal welding devices.


The job involves installing, maintaining, checking, repairing and servicing machinery, equipment, system controls and associated infrastructures.

Some experience of general building repairs would also be advantageous.

The top priority is to keep production running smoothly, safely and efficiently at all times.


Main Duties include;



  • Planning and undertaking scheduled and preventative maintenance

  • Responding to breakdowns

  • Installing new machines and equipment (single and three phase)

  • Installing new services (electricity, compressed air and gas, water and hydraulic oil)

  • Ensuring all machines are safe and operating correctly

  • Overseeing any sub-contracted maintenance work

  • Diagnosing faults (including computer diagnostic checks)

  • Dealing with emergencies and unplanned problems, often under pressure

  • Repairing machinery, tools and equipment

  • Sourcing specialist components and services

  • Maintaining records and updating logs

  • Ensuring compliance with HSE requirements

  • Creating maintenance procedures

  • Managing stocks of maintenance supplies and equipment

  • Liaising with production colleagues and attending weekly meetings

  • Prepare detailed schedule of work and costings for specific projects



  • Skills & Knowledge required;



  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to read engineering and isometric drawings and circuit diagrams

  • Good at solving problems

  • Excellent practical skills

  • Relevant technical knowledge

  • Understanding of H&S issues

  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical applications including: Motors and drives, Gear boxes, Basic power supply wiring (including 3-phase), Hydraulic and pneumatic systems, Fault finding and equipment repairs.

  • Some understanding and knowledge of: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Transformers, Lighting systems, Building services infrastructure & Basic building maintenance.


  • Qualifications needed;



  • A degree or served apprenticeship in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

  • Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2008 (17th Edition)

  • GCSE Maths and Science

  • IT Qualification (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook)


  • The role is Monday - Thursday 7:30am - 5pm, Fridays 7:30am - 4pm.

    You will be required to work outside of your standard hours when needed.

    £34,000 - £35,000 per annum.

    25 days holiday entitlement + 8 bank holidays.
