Established in 1919, H Smith & Sons of Honingham is a long-established and well-respected family run Building Contractor company that undertakes projects ranging in value from £100,000 to £6,000,000 in Norfolk.


The Role – Quantity Surveyor:

You will begin working alongside our current Quantity Surveyor, supporting with the imminent increased workload.

Once settled, the current Quantity Surveyor will take a step back allowing you to take the reins and come into your own in the position ready for their retirement shortly after.

The QS will continuously support you to ensure an orderly transition.


Role Responsibilities - Quantity Surveyor:

Working in our Estimating & Surveying Department, you will:

  • Work with clients to develop schemes which fit their budget constraints, preparing valuations and a clear schedule of work
  • Agree and keep clients up to date with the financial impact of variations before the project begins and as the project progresses
  • Ensure tender documentation is distributed to other team members
  • Provide the contract delivery team with clear direction of the work content for each project
  • Attend internal pre-contract meetings and site meetings
  • Negotiate Sub Contract Packages
  • Remeasure sub-contract works and agree Sub Contractor payments, informing them of any adjustments made to their invoices/valuations
  • Keep the project team informed as to the status of contract variations
  • Keep senior management informed on the financial performance of each project
  • Maintain company cashflow
  • Prepare regular summary reports covering: contract variation status, valuations submitted, contract financial performance and projections


Person Specification – Quantity Surveyor:

  • 3-5 years’ experience as a Quantity Surveyor
  • Experience in construction costs and contracts management
  • Good working knowledge of construction materials, the building process and modern procurement methods
  • A background in civil engineering, architecture or surveying
  • Self-motivated with excellent attention to detail
  • Highly numerical with good problem-solving skills
  • Able to work in a methodical manner
  • A team player, also able to work on own initiative
  • Experience using ConQuest for computerised estimating is desirable
  • A basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
