Accommodation Officer – Wakefield (Temp Vacancy)

Pay Rate: £17.12ph

Full-Time (37 hours)

Job Purpose:

To carry out visits to homeless service users in temporary accommodation to ensure that the tenancy conditions are being met, addressing any presenting issues, such as repairs, arrears and anti-social behaviour in order to maximise tenancy sustainment.

To provide support to service users whilst in accommodation, including those with complex needs and assistance to move on timely via a range of housing options within the district.


  • Responsible for ensuring that temporary accommodation is safe and fit for purpose, carrying out regular checklist inspections and addressing any defects or deficiencies to the fabric of the building or to furniture and fittings.

  • Responsible for the prompt identification and management of tenancy issues such as debt and anti-social behaviour in temporary accommodation, finding positive and supportive solutions to the issues.

    Responsible for notifying any serious issues to the team leader.

  • Responsible for supporting applicants to make or fulfil housing benefit claims when barriers such as non-engagement exist, or a home visit is required to gather documentation.

  • Provide advice or signpost service users to welfare benefit advice services to ensure income is maximised and employment opportunities are explored.

    Provide budgeting advice and refer to money advice services where applicable.

    Provide Housing Benefit advice for the different housing options available utilising housing benefit calculation tools.

  • Responsible for being able to identify all relevant service user debts including current arrears, shortfalls in housing benefit, recharge debts, or other debts owed which are connected to temporary accommodation which could present a barrier to move on.

    This will involve providing advice and support to the service user and completing income and expenditure forms.

  • Negotiation of realistic repayment plans with creditors and support service users to adhere to such plans. 

  • Assist or advise service users to apply for Local Welfare Provision, Short Term Benefit Advance, Budgeting Loans, Spend to Save and other available financial or charitable assistance in order overcome move on barriers and facilitate timely move on.

    Responsible for contacting debtors about any unpaid budgeting loans.

  • Responsible for setting up utility accounts into relevant name, ie service user or the Council.

  • Responsible for managing  risk in accordance with risk management plans, policies and procedures and sharing information relating to risk with colleagues as appropriate.

  • Responsible for serving possession notices as directed by a team leader or manager, creating witness statements and attending court.

  • Responsible for working on personalised housing plans to identify and effectively address the support needs and barriers to rehousing for vulnerable people who are placed in temporary accommodation.

  • Responsible for providing housing related support to households in temporary accommodation
