Head of Risk - Insurance and Financial Services

Job Description:

Our client, a successful financial services consultancy, has a permanent opportunity for a Head of Risk based in their Insurance & Financial Services practice.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced risk professional and the role can be based in London, Edinburgh or Glasgow.

The role holder will be part of the Insurance and Financial Services leadership team, working with the rest of senior management to implement the next phase of our client's strategic growth plans, as well as supporting the day-to-day operations of the practice.

This role will head up overall Risk proposition, combining the qualitative and quantitative aspects of risk management - with responsibilities spanning life and non-life clients both within and outside the UK.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • A highly experienced senior actuary or risk professional, with deep practitioner-level insurance expertise gained in the UK, in Europe, or further overseas.

  • Very strong knowledge of the key areas of Risk including Emerging Risks, Governance frameworks and policies, Investment / ALM Risk and Management of risk controls and setting risk appetites

  • Very strong knowledge of Solvency II - both in the UK and in Europe - and, ideally, knowledge of equivalent regulatory regimes, e.g.


  • Demonstrate proven success in mentoring and in supporting the development of the next generation of the practice's leaders and consultants.

  • A recognised industry leader (ideally having held a Chief Risk Officer role within the life or non-life industry), with proven experience of generating revenue and of leading the delivery of large and complex projects.

  • Strategic business acumen and knowledge of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing life and non-life insurers and reinsurers, in the UK, in Europe and beyond.

  • Determined and proactive, with high levels of energy, motivation and enthusiasm.

  • High emotional intelligence, excellent interpersonal skills, and be comfortable in engaging with senior stakeholders (actuarial or otherwise), including Board members, their advisors, and their regulators.

  • A clear, straightforward communication style, and be able to explain complex ideas in a straightforward way to lay audiences.

  • Willing and able to travel where necessary

Core Responsibilities:

  • Working with the rest of Insurance and Financial Services senior management to implement the next phase of strategic growth plans, as well as supporting the day-to-day operations of the practice.

  • The specific area of responsibility will be in building out Risk proposition - primarily within the qualitative and non-financial areas of risk management, supplementing quantitative risk management expertise to provide a complete Risk proposition.

  • This role-holder will help to win new client engagements and grow new and existing client relationships.

  • Play a key role in delivering assignments, primarily in risk management - covering UK and, ideally, international markets.

  • Leverage wider parts of the firm, including Risk Transfer, Investment and Digital teams, for the benefit of I&FS clients.

  • Play a lead role in marketing activity, including thought leadership materials and presenting at both internal and external conferences.
