The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Psychiatrist and Senior Clinical Leader to serve as Unit Clinical Director for a Mental Health Intensive Care Unit (MHICU) in a leading regional Australian mental health service.


This permanent, full-time role combines senior clinical responsibility, leadership, and strategic oversight of a 12-bed intensive psychiatric care unit.

You will manage a multidisciplinary medical team, provide high-level acute care, and lead governance, quality improvement, and service innovation initiatives.


This position is ideal for internationally trained psychiatrists seeking senior leadership opportunities and accelerated career progression within the Australian public mental health system.



Your Role


  • Provide direct clinical management and treatment of high-acuity psychiatric patients within the MHICU.




  • Lead and manage senior and junior medical staff, including performance and workforce development.




  • Oversee clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement programs for the unit.




  • Deliver clinical consultation services across the health district and participate in multidisciplinary care coordination.




  • Engage in teaching, training, and mentoring of medical students, trainees, and allied health staff.




  • Support research, evaluation, and service innovation initiatives within the mental health service.





About You


  • Fellowship of RANZCP or equivalent international qualification (e.g., MRCPsych, FRCPsych).




  • Eligible for AHPRA Specialist Registration or assessment under the Specialist Pathway.




  • Proven senior experience in acute, inpatient, and community psychiatry.




  • Strong leadership, management, and multidisciplinary team skills.




  • Knowledge of local mental health legislation (e.g., NSW Mental Health Act 2007).




  • Commitment to teaching, clinical research, and service development.
