Consultant Psychiatrist | Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre

An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a specialised Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC) within a major metropolitan tertiary hospital.


This permanent full-time position offers the opportunity to work at the interface of Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry, providing rapid assessment, acute intervention, and clinical leadership for patients presenting with complex mental health emergencies.

The Role

You will provide specialist psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients presenting to the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre and Emergency Department while supporting multidisciplinary teams delivering acute mental health care.


Key responsibilities include:



  • Conducting psychiatric assessments and acute mental health interventions

  • Managing patients presenting in psychiatric crisis within emergency settings

  • Providing clinical leadership to multidisciplinary emergency mental health teams

  • Supervising psychiatry registrars and junior medical staff

  • Collaborating closely with Emergency Medicine and hospital teams

  • Participating in teaching, training, and workforce development activities

  • Contributing to research, quality improvement, and clinical governance initiatives

  • Supporting safe, patient-centred care within a fast-paced clinical environment


What We're Looking For

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent specialist qualification

  • Specialist registration (or eligibility) with AHPRA

  • Psychiatrists expecting Fellowship within six months are encouraged to apply

  • Experience in acute psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, or inpatient mental health services

  • Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills

  • Commitment to teaching, supervision, and professional development

  • Interest in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service innovation

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and high-acuity environment
