An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join a specialist Mental Health Intensive Care Unit in Northern Sydney.

This is a senior clinical leadership position offering the opportunity to lead a specialist psychiatric intensive care service, oversee clinical governance and provide leadership to the medical workforce.

As Unit Clinical Director, you will provide specialist psychiatric care while leading the clinical governance, development and delivery of a Mental Health Intensive Care Unit.

The service provides intensive assessment and management for consumers experiencing acute and high levels of clinical risk, complex diagnostic and management needs, or severe acute symptoms requiring a specialist inpatient environment.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment


• Providing clinical leadership across the Mental Health Intensive Care Unit


• Leading and maintaining high-quality, safe and recovery-oriented mental health services


• Holding delegated responsibility for clinical governance within the unit


• Leading and managing the senior and junior medical workforce


• Supporting performance management and professional development of medical staff


• Working collaboratively with senior leadership across mental health services


• Providing clinical consultation across the broader health district


• Supporting multidisciplinary care, recovery-oriented practice and care coordination


• Contributing to teaching and training of medical students, graduates, psychiatry trainees and other healthcare professionals


• Participating in research, evaluation and quality improvement initiatives

• MBBS or equivalent and current registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia


• FRANZCP or recognition as a Specialist Psychiatrist by the Medical Board of Australia


• Overseas-trained psychiatrists with an appropriate specialist pathway may also be considered


• Applicants expecting to obtain FRANZCP within three months may be considered


• Demonstrated senior clinical experience in acute psychiatry


• Experience across general hospital, community and inpatient psychiatry settings


• Experience working within the NSW Mental Health Act 2007


• Proven leadership and management experience within multidisciplinary clinical teams


• Strong communication skills and experience working with senior and junior medical colleagues, GPs, consumers and carers


• Understanding of recovery-oriented and care coordination models


• Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance and quality improvement


• Experience or willingness to participate in clinical research


• Experience teaching medical, nursing and allied health staff and psychiatry trainees


• Commitment to state and national mental health priorities


• Current NSW Driver Licence
