The Opportunity

SMUK is an established specialist in commercial vehicle safety systems and fleet technology, working with fleet operators across the UK to deliver practical, engineered solutions that improve vehicle safety, compliance and operational performance.

We don't simply sell individual products.

We work with our customers to understand the challenges they face and bring together the right combination of technology, products, installation and support to deliver a Total Fleet Solution.

This is a unique opportunity to join Stream, our growing connected services division, in a role that combines business development, account management and strategic growth.

This is a proactive business development role for someone who enjoys creating opportunities, opening new doors and building strong commercial relationships.

Being a trusted customer contact and contributing to their success, retention and long-term account growth will be key.

You'll be responsible for winning new subscription customers, identifying upsell opportunities within existing accounts, and building lasting customer relationships to drive retention and recurring revenue.

In addition, the role will play an active part in shaping and executing Stream's growth strategy, offering far greater scope than a traditional business development position.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll take ownership of business development and management of key accounts for Stream, with responsibility for building a strong pipeline and delivering sustainable sales growth.

In addition to winning new business and driving subscription growth, the role will involve developing strong customer relationships throughout the customer lifecycle.

Working as part of a small and agile team, the Business Development Manager will support customer onboarding, help customers maximise the value of Stream's connected services, identify evolving operational needs, and work with internal stakeholders to translate customer requirements into effective solutions.

The role takes a consultative approach to understanding customer operations and workflows, helping to identify requirements, shape solutions and support successful adoption of Stream services.

Whilst not a technical support role, the successful candidate will be comfortable acting as a trusted customer contact and contributing to customer success, retention and long-term account growth.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, targeting and developing new business opportunities with commercial fleet operators.

Promoting and selling Stream connected service subscriptions to new and existing customers.

  • Identify and deliver upsell and cross-sell opportunities to increase recurring revenue and customer value.

  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships to support retention, engagement, and long-term account growth.

Taking a consultative approach to understanding each customer's fleets, problems and needs.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the Stream solution and problems it solves to provide engaging demonstrations and solid recommendations.

  • Demonstrate the commercial and operational value of Stream solutions through consultative conversations, customer reviews and ROI-focused recommendations.

  • Support customer onboarding, adoption and ongoing engagement with Stream services including end user training where required.

  • Identify customer requirements and work with internal teams to develop effective solutions and service enhancements.

  • Act as a key customer contact, helping to resolve issues and ensuring customers achieve maximum value from their investment.

  • Be the voice of the customer within Stream, sharing market intelligence, customer feedback and emerging requirements to support scaling and growth of Stream.

  • Promoting the breadth of SMUK's capabilities, identifying opportunities to bring together products, technology, installation and support to deliver a Total Fleet Solution.

  • Developing customer opportunities from initial engagement through site meetings, specification, quotation, negotiation and order.

  • Working collaboratively with our internal Sales, Projects, Engineering and Operations teams to ensure proposed solutions are practical, commercially viable and successfully delivered.

  • Maintaining a strong and well-managed sales pipeline through our CRM system.

  • Providing accurate and realistic sales forecasts and working towards agreed sales targets and objectives.

  • Developing a strong understanding of the connected service market, identifying emerging opportunities, target sectors and potential customers.

  • Representing SMUK professionally at customer meetings, industry events, exhibitions and trade shows.

What We're Looking For

Above all, we're looking for a commercially minded business developer who enjoys winning new business and developing long-term customer relationships.

You'll be commercially driven, comfortable creating your own opportunities and confident building relationships from the ground up.

You'll also understand that successful business development isn't just about winning an initial order.

It's about understanding the customer, delivering the right solution and developing a relationship that grows over time.

You'll ideally bring:

  • A proven track record in B2B business development, field sales or solution-based sales.

  • Demonstrable experience of identifying, developing and converting new business opportunities.

  • A consultative approach to selling, with the ability to understand a customer's requirements and develop an appropriate solution.

  • Understand logistics sector problems and be able to determine value in solutions.

  • Strong communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.

  • Commercial confidence and the ability to negotiate effectively.

  • Ability to engage credibly with stakeholders at all levels, from operational users through to senior decision-makers and business owners.

Additionally, adaptable based on business type from owner-operators to corporates.

  • A proactive, self-motivated approach and the ability to manage a regional territory effectively.

  • Good pipeline management, CRM discipline and forecasting skills.

  • A collaborative, team-focused approach, with a willingness to share knowledge, support colleagues and contribute to the wider success of the Sales team.

  • A full UK driving licence.
