JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Chemist
SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: The Chemist position is a degreed, experienced, product development role that is an integral part of the laboratory formulation staff.
This is an advanced level position for personnel that have a demonstrated, consistent, and extended record of high quality and reproducible results in all associated activities involved in formulation, testing and preparation of commercial products.
Simply stated, Chemists conduct experiments in the laboratory in order to analyze substances, develop new products, or improve existing ones.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Manipulate new or existing formulations to obtain required properties through adjustment of raw materials or processing parameters that meet customer expectations and are commercially successful.
Formula finalization including data entry into Product Vision.
Preparation of supporting materials required for formula transfer to production, such as product folders and QC specifications.
Formula maintenance support through the PPDCR process. Ensure compliance to all record keeping and documentation requirements supporting laboratory activities.
Provide technical assistance to internal departments and customers. Ensure and maintain an orderly and safe working environment for all employees. Other duties as assigned.
COMPENTENCIES:
Demonstrated track record of successful commercialization formulating multiple existing platforms to support projects with some degree of uncertainty with an advanced level of judgement and decision making. Advanced knowledge of raw materials, processing and testing methods routinely used within the work steps and in the general coatings marketplace.
Advanced level of judgement and independent thinking.

Maintains lubricant levels for mixer seal system and strainer ram lubrication system, check pumps % daily maintain grease levels, check pumps % daily. Checks all equipment air filters on a daily basis and replaces as necessary. Checks operation of air compressor and cooling tower daily, notes problems and makes corrections as required. Check monthly with Cooling Water Treatment Technician. Checks operation of algicide feeding system daily and refills as needed. Makes repairs to facilities as needed to include plumbing, heating, and A/C. Performs minor electrical maintenance. Operates maintenance machine tools, performs welding as needed, cutting torch and brazing. Responsible for maintenance shop housekeeping. Follows safe practices in the performance of all duties. Delivers and picks up items used for maintenance needs. Maintain air in line oiler throughout plant when needed lubricates. Performs other miscellaneous maintenance duties as assigned by supervisor.

Works directly with the Production Superintendent, other Production Supervisors, Process Technicians, Utility, and others in the safe handling of the equipment and chemical intermediates in both storage and use in production. Comprehension of manufacturing techniques vacuum distillation, atmospheric controls, chemical addition, filtration methods, control of exothermic reactions, and adjustment of rates of addition within the operating requirement of equipment used. Inventory Control through cycle counts, batch log & MUS record keeping, and filling or transferring documentation. Manages inventory reduction per departmental inventory reduction strategy. Understand and demonstrate compliance with HMIS, SDS's, HAZCOM, General Safety, Tank Markings, Plant Signage, HAZWASTE, LO/TO, PSM, PPE protocol, and proper housekeeping.
