Title: Technical Service Engineer

Summary:
Carboline is seeking a Technical Service Engineer (all experience levels welcome) to provide hands-on technical support to both internal and external customers.
In this role, you will partner closely with Sales, R&D, and Marketing to deliver product expertise, troubleshoot field challenges, and support overall business growth.
Minimum Requirements:
4-year technical degree or equivalent experience
Technical Service and/or coatings experience preferred
NACE CIP certification preferred (Level 2+ for advanced candidates) or ability to obtain
Strong problem-solving and customer-facing skills
Ability to travel up to 20% as needed
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
Exposure to chemicals including: amines, polyamides, isocyanates, epoxies, alkyds, acrylics, and inorganic compounds
Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Must pass respirator medical evaluation and pulmonary function testing per OSHA requirements
Essential Functions:
Develop strong technical expertise in Carboline products, including performance, properties, and application methods
Assess product strengths and limitations to recommend effective solutions across applications
Represent Carboline in industry organizations (e.g., NACE/AMPP, SSPC) and stay current on industry trends
Support regional sales strategies and key initiatives, including TAM and Managed Services (advanced level)
Champion company safety, quality, and compliance standards
Sales & Technical Support:
Serve as a technical expert for assigned product lines, supporting sales efforts and customer engagements
Partner with Sales to deliver presentations, provide system recommendations, and support field opportunities
Train sales teams, customers, and specifiers on product performance and best practices
Collaborate with Sales, R&D, and Marketing on product development, improvements, and positioning
Problem Solving & Issue Resolution:
Troubleshoot product and application issues, partnering with Sales to investigate and resolve concerns
Document findings, communicate insights to internal stakeholders, and support corrective action
Conduct job site inspections as needed (level-dependent)
Track and drive timely resolution of technical service reports and open issues

The Process Engineer II is an extension of management.
Responsibilities are broad and include safety, product quality, process control, productivity improvement, and development of a LEAN culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assume a leadership position at the facility in partnership with the shift supervisors.
Activities include resolution and communication regarding safety issues.
Execute scheduled PHA's and JSA's.
Proactively monitor areas and remediate potential safety issues.
LEAN Culture
Develop and execute "standard work" activities.
Improve productivity through the elimination of non-value-added activities.
Apply Engineering principles and methodologies to improve productivity and eliminate waste.
Product Quality
Work to maximize equipment efficiency and quality for output.
Member of the facility QIC.
Ensure identification of root cause and subsequent prevention of future customer complaints.
Assist in the training of operators with a focus on quality critical product specifications and process parameters.
Significant experience with equipment troubleshooting and process design.
Project Management
Must be capable of successfully managing major process equipment projects (>$750k) on time and on budget.
Managerial
Must be capable of leading and/or supervising others in their role or in the execution of completing a project.
Mentors less experienced engineers.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
B.S.
in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Controls, or similar Engineering Degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
Two to four years of related experience and/or training.
Must have experience in both practical Process Engineering and Project Management.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Six Sigma Black Belt is preferred.
OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficiency in workflow processes, value stream efficiency, and systems thinking.
Understanding process variance and the resultant effects on Quality.
Knowledge of applied statistics.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION DUTIES/TASKS:
Satellite Hazardous Waste Accumulation
Production tank/Cleaning/filling
1.
Production Quality Lab Technicians may have to dispose of product samples, line flush, off-spec product, or expired product retain samples.
This waste material is transferred to the hazardous waste satellite accumulation drum.
2.
Production workers clean equipment and tanks pre-rinse, wipe, scrub, and final rinse surfaces using wash solvent, brushes and rags.
Dirty solvent is transferred to the satellite accumulation area.
3.
Transfer used wash solvent to the satellite accumulation drum or tank.
4.
Ensure hazardous waste storage or accumulation containers remain sealed except during the addition or removal of waste.
5.
Ensure Hazardous Waste storage containers are clearly labeled "Hazardous Waste."
6.
Care must be exercised when introducing waste into the satellite accumulation drum.
Do not drop on floor or area.
In the case of any spilled material, spills or drops shall be cleaned up immediately.
7.
When 55 gallons has accumulated, the satellite accumulation container must be moved to a permanent hazardous waste storage area within 3 days and relabeled "Hazardous Waste."

Provides preventive and unplanned maintenance throughout the plan
Leads the Maintenance and Engineering Teams and holds each employee accountable
Works within computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to plan, assign, and close work orders, as required
Schedules maintenance technicians to provide required manpower during production or downtime
Places orders for equipment/supplies in SAP
Troubleshoots, plans, modifies, and repairs/rebuilds all types of plant equipment
Performs basic electrical troubleshooting, repair, and construction, as required
Works in accordance with OSHA and Tremco safety policies and procedures
Enters MRO receipts in SAP system, maintains parts inventory/shop/equipment files/records
Directs work of other maintenance personnel and others, as required (contractors, operators, etc.)
Research equipment/facility needs as appropriate through manuals, files, internet, etc.
Works in accordance with OSHA and Tremco safety rules, policies, procedures
Performs other job duties, as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree from four or 5-year college or university, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering
7 years related experience and/or training managing maintenance teams and working in manufacturing environments
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to build relationships with all levels of the plant organization (senior management, plant leadership team, maintenance staff, unionized hourly production employees)
Knowledge of modern control systems (PLC's, AC/DC Drives, etc.)
Capital equipment specification/installation
Creation of standard work instructions/SOP's
Experience with maintenance management systems (PM's, work orders)
Demonstrated team leadership skills
Demonstrated knowledge of arithmetic, statistics, continuous improvement concepts, ISO procedures, and their applications.
Ability to apply Excel, Word, and SAP applications to daily job responsibilities.
Continuous web process and batch process equipment experience
Knowledge of safety, environmental, SOX, and workplace regulations

Manages the ordering of repair parts, maintenance supplies, special or standard equipment, and tools.

Responsibilities
Responsible for Plant Maintenance Safety and associated programs.
Lead, manage and support the maintenance supervisors and maintenance team.
Plan, Schedule and implement all Maintenance activities for Production and Facilities.
Ensure the Plant and facility meets and complies with Company, and Government standards.
Establish, maintain and oversee plant maintenance Training matrix and the maintenance training program.
Coach, counsel and guide the maintenance team in 5S and continuous improvement strategies.
Coordinate work and provide support for contractors, vendors and service groups.
Establish, develop and sustain the plant CMM system which includes predictive and preventive maintenance.
Establish, develop and sustain the plant repair parts inventory and MRO system.
Maintain the maintenance budget and cost control measures.
Requirements
Specific Training beyond High School Diploma
5 to 7 years of experience in the relevant field.
Management training with maintenance skills, knowledge and ability.
Excellent leadership, communication, and time management skills
Microsoft Office software, maintenance management software and spreadsheets skills
Ability to hit timelines.
