R&D Scientist & Technical Leader
JOB DESCRIPTION We are seeking an R&D Scientist and Technical Leader, a critical role within our R&D organization. If you have expertise in waterborne chemistry and formulations knowledge in both architectural and industrial products, this is the opportunity you've been looking for. You should also have an expert level of technical knowledge with a strong track record of product and process development, innovation, and commercialization in coating technologies. You must also possess strong, demonstrated competencies and experience in project management accompanied by people and organizational leadership skills. Technology Knowledge: Expertise in broad ranges of coating chemistries particularly acrylic, epoxy, urethane, polyaspartics and sil(ox)anes etc. Expertise in application and formulation science for various coating systems of primer, basecoat, topcoat systems for liquid waterborne, solventborne and 2K coatings along with expert understanding of DIY, Contractor, and OEM Coatings. Strong command on analytical methods and structure-property relationship Expert understanding of manufacturing process and product development Technical Leadership: Action Oriented - ability to make strategic decisions (technical and staff utilization) and influence leaders and scientist to execute those initiative while managing business strategy and value creation Demonstrated skillset and track record in creating an environment to scout new ideas and innovation. QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE: Chemistry - Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. Production and Processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. At least 4 years of technical supervisory or management experience with a diverse workforce., M.S. or equivalent science degree in Chemistry, must possess a strong knowledge of organic chemistry, or related scientific field, minimum 10 years technical experience in product development in specific area of expertise, strong understanding of manufacturing, Quality assurance, scale up procedures, applications, raw materials purchasing, regulatory matters and must be computer literate, 2 to 3 years successful working experience with marketing group. Develop and execute account business plans on monthly and annual cadences, setting growth targets and tracking performance against them. Represent Mantrose Group at industry tradeshows (NCA, SupplySide, United Fresh, and others), leveraging these events for prospecting and relationship deepening. Technical Selling & Customer Engagement Serve as the primary commercial interface for your accounts, conducting product demonstrations, application discussions, and customized technical presentations. Partner with R&D and product management to match Mantrose capabilities to customer formulation challenges, from confectionery and pharmaceutical coatings to NatureSeal post-harvest treatment programs for fresh-cut produce processors. Develop NatureSeal opportunities across produce processors and foodservice distributors, educating buyers and technical staff on shelf-life extension, browning inhibition, and food safety benefits. Translate customer requirements into internal project briefs, ensuring cross-functional teams have the context needed to develop targeted solutions. Market Intelligence & Strategy Continuously gather competitive intelligence on pricing, product performance, applications, and market trends across your covered segments. Analyze customer and market data to surface patterns, inform pricing decisions, and identify white space for product development. Contribute to commercial strategy discussions by sharing field perspective on competitor activity, regulatory developments, and customer priorities. Professional Development Maintain current technical knowledge across covered application areas through industry publications, educational workshops, and participation in relevant professional societies. Build and sustain a professional network that supports long-term business development across all covered market segments. QUALIFICATIONS Required Bachelor's degree in Food Science or a closely related technical discipline. 5+ years of technical sales or business development experience in food ingredients, specialty chemicals, or a directly adjacent field. Demonstrated ability to sell on technical value: capable of diagnosing a customer application problem, proposing a solution, and supporting trials through to commercialization. Working knowledge of the functional food ingredient space, with familiarity across at least one of the following: confections, pharma coatings, fresh produce, or nutraceuticals.
