Technician / MOT Tester
Location: Braintree, Essex
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £29,500 £38,000 per year (depending on experience and qualifications)
We are currently seeking a skilled Technician / MOT Tester to join a well-established dealership in Braintree.
This role is ideal for a qualified and experienced technician who enjoys MOT testing and working in a supportive, family-run environment.
You will be part of a professional team that takes pride in high-quality workmanship, customer satisfaction, and teamworkwithout the pressure of heavy mechanical work.
About the Role:
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting routine MOT tests on customer vehicles
- Performing repairs and adjustments required for MOT compliance
- Carrying out minor servicing or maintenance tasks between MOT appointments (no heavy repair work)
- Ensuring all work meets industry and safety standards
- Reviewing vehicle health and ordering necessary parts
What Were Looking For
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in Light Vehicle Maintenance (required)
- Valid MOT Testing Licence (required)
- Full UK Driving Licence (required)
- Previous dealership or independent workshop experience (preferred)
- Ability to work efficiently on your own and as part of a team

This role suits a hands-on engineer with a strong electrical background who can work autonomously on customer sites, delivering reliable, high-quality technical support.
The Field Service Engineer will help ensure charging assets remain safe, compliant, and performing at their best, meeting both company and client expectations.

Essential
- NVQ Level 3 Electrical qualification
- Minimum 2 years experience in a field-based engineering role (commissioning, maintenance, or repair of electrical systems/equipment)
- Proven ability to work independently on client sites, diagnosing and resolving issues without direct supervision
- Experience working in SLA-driven environments
- Competent with basic test and measurement tools (e.g., multimeters, voltage testers)

- Confident communicator with good customer-facing skills
- Effective time management, particularly when travelling between sites
- Full UK driving licence with 6 penalty points or fewer

- Keep company tools, assets and test equipment in good condition, reporting defects immediately

- Replace defective parts (and occasionally complete charger units), ensuring repairs follow manufacturer guidance

ð§ About the Role: We are working on behalf of the UKs largest automotive service, maintenance, and repair business, actively seeking a qualified MOT Tester / Vehicle Technician to join their growing team in Weston-super-Mare.
As an MOT Tester and Technician, youll be responsible for carrying out MOTs to DVSA standards as well as general servicing, diagnostics, and repair work on a range of light vehicles.
Youll work in a fast-paced, professional environment with the opportunity to grow your skillset through ongoing manufacturer and EV/hybrid training.

Key Responsibilities:
- Perform MOT tests (Class 4, 5 or 7)
- Carry out servicing, repairs, diagnostics, and general vehicle inspections
- Ensure all work is completed to manufacturer and safety standards
- Assist with general workshop tasks when not conducting MOTs
- Maintain detailed records of work completed and parts used
ð Requirements:
- Valid MOT Testing Licence
- Qualified to IMI/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
(Accepted: City & Guilds, Level 2 with experience, or equivalent) - Experience working in a dealership, independent garage, or service centre
- Skilled in diagnostics and repair work on cars and light commercial vehicles
- Full UK driving licence with no more than 9 points
- EV / Hybrid training is a plus training will be provided if not already certified
- Positive, team-oriented approach
