Hardware Design Engineer - Leeds


This small, innovative company is developing a range of low-power navigation products and is seeking a Hardware Design Engineer who can bring enthusiasm and new ideas to the design process.


To remain as the market leader in their field, they are continually developing products and innovating with the addition of new technologies and sensors to produce the critical data that their clients need.

In order to accelerate the development of their next generation of products for both our existing market, as well as new market opportunities they are seeking an experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic Hardware Design Engineer with a minimum of 5 years experience in electronic hardware design and development.


Design for manufacture is a key part of the available position, therefore (as a minimum) an in-depth appreciation and understanding of this critical aspect of the role is required.


The role would ultimately involve the candidate having responsibility for all aspects of electronic hardware design, including managing the work of junior members of the team.


Essential skills and experience:



  • A minimum of a 2:1 Bachelors Degree in Electronic Engineering (or largely similar degree)

  • High performance multi-layer PCB design (experience of Circuit Studio or Altium would be highly desirable)

  • Able to demonstrate an in-depth appreciation and understanding of design for manufacture

  • Experienced in digital interfacing to a wide range of peripherals

  • Experienced in analogue electronic circuit design

  • Experienced in system power supply design to meet low noise and low power requirements

  • Skilled in use of a wide range of test equipment

  • Highly proficient at debugging hardware issues and faults, including identifying causes and determining solutions to sub-optimal performance

  • Experience of liaising directly with board manufacturers to ensure manufacturability of boards and to ensure our designs benefit from latest advances in board manufacturing techniques


Desirable skills:



  • Proficient at embedded programming to the extent that prototype boards can be developed and proven

  • Experience of RF design would be highly advantageous

  • Experience of RF antenna design and/or successful integration into products

  • Experience of design to meet radio conformity regulations and first-hand experience of successfully achieving compliance at external test houses would be highly desirable
