Consultant Psychiatrist ( Older Persons)

THE POSITION


We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in Older Adult Mental Health for a well-established regional mental health department.

This permanent, full-time position offers an opportunity to provide clinical assessment and treatment for patients aged 65+ with mental illnesses associated with ageing.

The role includes community-based outreach, participation in innovative mental health projects, and collaboration with geriatric and other medical teams.


You will be responsible for:



  • Clinical assessment and psychiatric treatment for older adults in the community.

  • Collaborating with general practitioners and health care professionals.

  • Supervising and training medical students, junior doctors, and registrars.

  • Participating in research projects relevant to mental health services.

  • Contributing to the on-call roster and the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) service.

ABOUT THE ESTABLISHMENT


The Older Adult Mental Health Team is comprised of a multidisciplinary staff, including registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals.

In addition to local services, outreach services are provided to neighbouring towns.

Collaboration with the local geriatrics team allows for the provision of a memory service.

The team also leads innovative projects in the field of dementia care, and supports staff-driven ideas for service improvement.


The mental health department includes a 16-bed adult inpatient unit, child and adult community services, and a strong peer group of psychiatrists, registrars, and other medical professionals.

This provides a supportive working environment with manageable caseloads and on-call requirements.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS


The ideal candidate will have:



  • Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • Fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or equivalent.
