Senior Automation Engineer

A position for a Senior Automation Engineer role based in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland has become available, with a leading provider of automation, robotics, and industrial software solutions.



We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-established engineering business that delivers automation, electrical, mechanical, robotics, and software development solutions across a wide range of manufacturing and industrial sectors.


The Senior Automation Engineer job, based in Dundalk, is a full-time permanent position and will form part of a highly experienced engineering team, supporting the development, commissioning, validation, and ongoing support of automation control systems utilising cutting-edge technologies.



Candidates should be based within a commutable distance of Dundalk, County Louth, or be willing to relocate.


This role offers a varied mix of automation software development, project delivery, customer interaction, commissioning activities, and technical leadership responsibilities, ensuring the successful delivery of innovative automation solutions across multiple industries.



Ideal candidates for the Senior Automation Engineer job will have experience in the following areas:



  • Managing the specification, development, installation, and validation of automation projects within budget and agreed project requirements.

  • Developing automation software for bespoke machines and manufacturing systems.

  • Programming, testing, simulating, and commissioning PLC, HMI, and SCADA control systems.

  • Interacting directly with customers to understand and define technical requirements.

  • Assessing existing technologies, machinery, and manufacturing processes to identify improvements.

  • Designing and delivering best-in-class automation and control solutions.

  • Supporting operations and engineering teams with technical queries and troubleshooting activities.

  • Producing detailed technical documentation and managing project change control processes.

  • Working independently whilst managing multiple projects and priorities to tight deadlines.

  • Taking ownership of projects from initial concept through to final commissioning and handover.

  • Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

  • Mentoring, supporting, and developing junior engineers.

  • Applying strong problem-solving skills to complex automation and control challenges.

  • Maintaining and validating automation systems in a compliant and controlled manner.



The successful candidate will ideally possess:



  • A third-level qualification in Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent discipline.

  • Extensive industry experience within automation, controls, manufacturing, or process engineering environments.

  • Strong experience with Rockwell Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View, Ignition, Siemens TIA Portal/Step7, OSI PI Historian, or VBA.

  • A thorough understanding of automation principles, control systems, and engineering best practices.

  • Knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11 and GAMP within regulated industries (advantageous).

  • Cisco Networking, VMware, or equivalent qualifications (advantageous).

  • Knowledge of robotics systems and machinery safety standards (advantageous).

  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills.

  • Excellent organisational and project management capabilities.

  • Exceptional troubleshooting, fault-finding, and analytical skills.

  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • A positive, proactive, and professional approach to engineering challenges.
