Head of Operations
We're looking for an experienced Head of Operations to take ownership of our project management and installation team as NoiseBoys grows.
This is a senior, hands-on role with plenty of freedom to shape the team and operation.
It will suit someone who has experience of building and developing operational teams, rather than simply inheriting an established structure.
If you are already successfully running projects or operations but want more freedom to influence how a business works, this is an opportunity to build the team, systems and structure needed for the next stage of our growth.
The Offer
- £55,000-£65,000 basic salary, depending on experience
- Car allowance
- Private healthcare
- Pension contribution
- Flexible working, including some home working
- Ongoing training and development
- The freedom to shape the team, systems and working practices
- The opportunity to play a significant part in the growth of NoiseBoys
NoiseBoys is a specialist audio, lighting and visual installation company.
For 17 years we've delivered projects across the UK in cathedrals, heritage buildings, theatres, schools, entertainment venues, race tracks, sports stadia and other spaces where people gather.
NoiseBoys has a plan for growth over the next few years, and we are looking for someone who will be instrumental in that growth.
You will have real autonomy and influence over how the operational team develops, with responsibility for developing the people already here, planning and recruiting for growth, managing capacity across projects and improving the systems and processes that support the operation.
Success will mean a strong and developing team, enough capacity for the business to grow, well-planned projects and the high standard of delivery our customers expect.
The RoleThis senior role is made up of three main responsibilities:
Build a Great TeamWe have an existing team of people who deliver our installations, made up of a mix of project managers, practical installers and technical engineers.
You will lead the project managers and installation team, setting and maintaining expectations for delivery and developing the people responsible for delivering it.
The team are busy and often out on the road, so development needs to be intentional and planned.
Your responsibility will be to get to know the team in person and ensure they are being developed as individuals, finding and playing to their strengths and improving the skills they need for career progression.
Build CapacityAs NoiseBoys grows, the operational team needs to grow with it.
You will plan for the people, skills and capacity we need, deciding where to develop existing people, where to recruit and where to use subcontractors, while helping shape the structure of the team as it grows.
Future workload will also be in your remit.
You'll work with the sales team to look ahead, understand where capacity may become tight and make changes to maintain our ability to deliver well.
Alongside building for the future, you will be responsible for making sure the work we already have is properly planned, delivered and supported.
You will have the freedom and responsibility to improve the systems and processes behind that delivery as we grow.
That means having a clear view of all live and upcoming projects and working with the project managers to ensure people and resources are allocated effectively.
As projects inevitably change, you will support and develop the Project Managers to plan and resource confidently and keep customers informed.
The ChallengeWe are a nationwide project-based business, which means there are natural peaks and troughs in workload.
Both can be operationally challenging, particularly while we are intentionally growing, and projects do not always go exactly to plan.
Developing the existing team and bringing in new people in the midst of live project work means this will not be a purely desk-based role.
It requires someone proactive, hands-on and self-motivated who stays close enough to the work to spot problems early and get involved when necessary.
For the right person, this is a great opportunity to get stuck in and take ownership, with the freedom to build and develop both themselves and their team.
The Person- You will have previous experience of building or significantly growing an operational team, rather than only managing an established one.
- You will have experience of managing teams who deliver projects to deadlines and budgets.
- Experience in lighting or AV projects is not essential, although experience in a similar technical project environment would be advantageous.
- You will have good commercial awareness, including an understanding of project profitability and on-time delivery.
- You will be genuinely interested in people and good at developing, motivating and getting the best from them.
- You will have a practical planning brain, strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise when things get busy.
- You will be adaptable, self-motivated and comfortable working with a mix of office time, site time, planning and people.
- You will be accountable for delivery and weekly reporting against agreed targets and progress, but you will not be heavily managed.
- You will work well independently when needed while also playing an active role within the wider team.
- You will fit well with our friendly, down-to-earth and professional culture, communicating openly, supporting those around you and adapting easily to change.
- You will be eligible to work in the UK and have a full UK driving licence.
Like many roles at NoiseBoys, this is not a strict 9-5.
Our projects are nationwide, so there will be occasions when you need to travel, stay away overnight or support something outside normal working hours.
Equally, we do not expect you to sit at a desk simply for the sake of it.
We expect you to deliver while managing your own time sensibly around what the business and team need.
The Next Steps
When applying, we'd particularly like to hear what you've built before: the team you started with, how it grew and what your role was in making that happen.
