Air Conditioning Service Engineer

Commercial Air Conditioning Service Engineer – Future Service Lead

AB-Zero Air Conditioning Ltd

Salary: £45,000–£55,000 depending on experience, plus company van, pension and benefits.

About AB-Zero

AB-Zero is an established commercial air conditioning contractor specialising in the installation, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of commercial HVAC systems.

We work with offices, schools, restaurants and commercial clients across London and the South East, installing and maintaining VRF, VRV and split systems.

We are F-Gas and REFCOM accredited and are continuing to expand our service offering.

The Opportunity

We're launching a dedicated service and maintenance division and are looking for an experienced Commercial Air Conditioning Service Engineer to become the first key hire and play a major role in building it.

Initially, you'll be hands-on, carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), diagnosing faults and supporting the delivery of our growing maintenance workload.

While our existing maintenance portfolio is currently relatively small, it is expanding, and we need someone willing to take ownership of the work and help develop this side of the business.

This role comes with a clear progression path.

Over approximately two years, the intention is for you to take responsibility for running the maintenance operation, managing a team of service engineers, organising schedules and overseeing service delivery.

This is not simply another service engineering position.

We're looking for someone who wants to develop into a leadership role and ultimately take ownership of the service division.

What You'll Do

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance on commercial air conditioning systems, including cleaning, filter changes and F-Gas leak checks.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair faults on VRF, VRV and split systems.
  • Undertake reactive maintenance and service visits across commercial client sites.
  • Complete accurate service reports, maintenance records and F-Gas documentation.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, facilities managers and site contacts.
  • Support commissioning and validation work when required.
  • Assist with the delivery and development of the growing maintenance workload.
  • Over time, take responsibility for planning the service diary, coordinating engineers and managing the maintenance team.

Working Arrangements

  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm.
  • Location: Based from home, with travel to client sites.
  • Travel: Engineers start from home, with travel paid door to door.

Travel time is recognised for up to one hour each way.
  • Work locations: Approximately 95% of the work is currently across London, with the remainder in Essex and the surrounding areas.
  • Overtime: Paid at time and a half (1.5x).
  • Call-outs: There is currently no out-of-hours call-out requirement.

What We're Looking For

  • F-Gas Category 1 certification.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Solid experience servicing and fault-finding on commercial air conditioning systems.
  • Experience with Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Samsung systems would be advantageous.
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients, facilities managers and other site contacts.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • A reliable, proactive approach and pride in delivering quality work.
  • Someone who is commercially aware and interested in helping develop a growing service operation.
  • Most importantly, the ambition and willingness to progress into managing a team of service engineers.

Please note: This position is intended to develop into a Service Lead role.

We are specifically looking for someone who wants to take on management responsibility in the future, rather than someone looking for a purely hands-on engineering position long term.

What You'll Get

  • £45,000–£55,000 salary, depending on experience.
  • Company van.
  • Company pension.
  • Standard holiday entitlement.
  • Full training and development support.
  • Company-provided tools and equipment.
  • Overtime paid at 1.5x.
  • Paid travel time, door to door, up to one hour each way.
  • No current out-of-hours call-out requirement.
  • A genuine opportunity to build and eventually lead a dedicated service and maintenance division.

Career Progression

The successful candidate will initially focus on delivering maintenance and service work while helping AB-Zero grow its customer base and maintenance portfolio.

As the division develops, the expectation is that within approximately two years you'll progress into running the maintenance operation, taking responsibility for the service engineers, scheduling, client relationships and overall service delivery.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a growing part of the business and build a long-term career with AB-Zero.
