Financial Controller

Harper May is working with a well-established and expanding retail group that is looking to appoint a commercially driven Financial Controller to lead its finance function.

With a growing footprint across both physical locations and e-commerce channels, the business is well positioned for further growth and now requires a finance leader to support its next phase of development.

Role Overview:
This is a key leadership role overseeing all areas of financial management, including reporting, planning, controls, and team development.

The Financial Controller will work closely with senior stakeholders to provide commercial insight, improve operational processes, and ensure strong financial governance across a multi-channel retail operation.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Deliver accurate and timely monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting


  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting process across stores, online, and group operations


  • Strengthen internal financial controls and ensure full compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements


  • Manage and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of quality, accountability, and growth


  • Coordinate the year-end audit and liaise with external auditors and advisors


  • Provide commercial analysis and insight to support pricing, margin, and stock planning decisions


  • Identify and implement improvements to financial systems and reporting tools


  • Support KPI tracking, performance dashboards, and board-level reporting


Key Requirements:



  • ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified with strong post-qualified experience


  • Background in retail, consumer products, or multi-site environments is highly preferred


  • Sound technical accounting knowledge and experience across budgeting, controls, and reporting


  • Strong commercial mindset with the ability to support decision-making across operations


  • Proven team leadership skills with a hands-on approach to process improvement


  • Advanced Excel proficiency and familiarity with retail-oriented finance systems (e.g.

    Sage, NetSuite, or similar)
